<description><![CDATA[The Centro de Prevención de la Violencia en Jóvenes Hispanos (center for violence prevention among young Hispanics) of the Filius Institute of the University of Puerto Rico's Central Administration is one of ten projects financed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, created to prevent violence among young people, including girls and boys. The Center is a research and education entity that works to form close ties with communities of the Metropolitan Area of San Juan, Puerto Rico, in order to collaborate in the implementation of initiatives aimed at preventing this social problem. ]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[HETS Shares With Its Member Institutions $30K of Its FIPSE LAAP Grant]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[The Hispanic Educational Telecommunications System (HETS) recently granted around $30,000 of its Learning Anytime Anywhere Partnerships (LAAP) grant, from FIPSE, among several member institutions that competed for a planning grant to develop online learning collaboration initiatives. HETS, a consortium of 18 colleges and universities dedicated to expanding Hispanics’ opportunities for higher education through distance learning, started facilitating this inter-institutional collaboration initiative during a workshop offered on last June’s board meeting in New York. Six groups, including almost 50 academic leaders, distance education administrators, and faculty from 13 member institutions in California, Florida, New York, Puerto Rico, and Texas are now working jointly in these inter-institutional initiatives. ]]></description>

HETS has now a membership of 22 leading higher education institutions in Puerto Rico, Colombia, and states such as California, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Founded in 1993, the consortium is the nation's first bilingual distance education consortium and has its headquarters on the Inter American University of Puerto Rico. ]]></description>

This initiative, part of an alliance between NASA and HETS, uses videoconferencing to connect NASA's researchers with Hispanic students attending colleges and universities affiliated with the Consortium. This meeting also place gave to a set of important decisions for the continuation and sustainability of the HETS Consortium, including important strategic directions that will certainly be of a great benefit and advancement for its member institutions. Board officials and representatives from members in California, New York, New Mexico, Puerto Rico, Texas, and Colombia attended this meeting and contributed with their expertise to decisions made on the future of HETS. ]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[During the month of November, the Hispanic Educational Telecommunications System joined the family of the Ana G. M&eacute;ndez University System, as the institution officially became the new host institution of the Consortium for the next years to come. After being elected as the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Jos&eacute; F. M&eacute;ndez, President of such institution, together with the members of the Board, proposed moving the headquarters of the HETS Consortium to the AGMUS’s facilities, particularly within the institution’s Center for Distance Education and Telecommunications (CETED, by its Spanish acronym). This change comes in a moment of significant growth for the Consortium itself, since it is developing now and will be implementing next semester its new strategic plan. ]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[Successful and Decisive Board Meeting in Puerto Rico]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[With Presidents and representatives from a total of 18 member institutions, and representatives from its new corporate and nonprofit members, the HETS Consortium celebrated one of its most successful and decisive Board Meetings yet. Presided by Mr. Jos&eacute; F. M&eacute;ndez, President of the Ana G. M&eacute;ndez University System, this Board Meeting gave place to the discussion and approval of the first full strategic plan in the history of the Consortium, a document that defines the direction of the organizations for the next three years. The meeting took place last January 11 and 12, at the Condado Plaza Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In the evening of January 11, members got together with other potential corporate and institutional members for a reception, where also new members were recognized.]]></description>
