The HETS Connection
Volume : 7 - Issue : 1 - MARCH 2011

Message from the Chairman of the Board

As a bilingual consortium dedicated to serving the higher education needs of the fast-growing Hispanic communities, HETS continues to develop in several areas, including an online journal, professional development opportunities delivered in an online format, and an opportunity for direct interaction through a Showcase Conference. Our main focus is to enhance access, improve retention and provide assistance to institutions regarding institutional assessment. As the Chair of the Board of Directors, I am proud to report that we are making good progress to meet these goals. Here is a sampling of what we are doing.

HETS Online Journal- The inaugural Online Journal was launched in October 2010 (http://www.hets.org/journal/general/45-home). Four articles were accepted. The editorial board is receiving new article submissions for consideration. We have three submissions to date and an inquiry for a fourth. The next issue will be published in March 2011. The journal's goal is to publish original, peer-reviewed and high quality scientific papers, research review, evidence-based articles, as well as other products of research in the field of technology in education. We are in the process of reviewing the articles submitted for consideration. The guidelines for publication may be found at: http://www.hets.org/journal/images/Uploads/General/cal%20for%20articles%20ago-10%20and%20journal%20guidelines.pdf.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT EVENTS (PDEs): The HETS Consortium's priorities involve various events throughout the year that are tailored to the educational growth needs of today's Higher Education institutions. These events, among others, cover several areas of interest in Hispanic Higher Education, especially as they relate to technology innovations for the success of the Hispanic learner. These include: online teaching strategies, online student support services, student retention strategies, online learning foundations, best practices, online teaching quality indicators, and economies of scales for postsecondary institutions. This year, we are concentrating on creating cost effective online professional development activities. The educational contents of these activities will be translated into English by the end of the year.

SHOWCASE CONFERENCE: A Second Best Practices Showcase Conference will be held in February 2012. The Conference will be a mixed-media conference so that faculty and administrators who cannot travel to Puerto Rico can avail themselves of some of the content delivered by the participants. Member institutions are encouraged to submit their best practices for the upcoming conference. For information from last year's showcase, please go to: http://www.hets.org/content.php?cn_id=170 .

This issue of the HETS Connection includes news and details on these and other initiatives. It also includes a report on our most recent Board Meeting and a summary of the Consortium's accomplishments during the first semester of this academic year. Should you have any questions, feel free to contact the HETS office.
