HETS Chairman's Message
Welcome to the spring issue of the HETS Online Journal,
As the Chair of the Board of Directors, I would like to take a moment to highlight the compelling reasons for our journal in the ever expanding arena of technology and growth of the Hispanic population. Numbers alone will not make this segment of the population an important player in the world’s economic recovery. Instead, a well-educated, technically savvy Hispanic population will be at the table, so to speak, to influence the economic agenda and information and innovation are the keys to open the doors to success.
With so many new technological advances the very nature of how communication and information is delivered is very different than it was just a few years ago. Its scope has grown as well, as the web allows us to reach an ever growing and diverse audience. HETS is committed to deepening the understanding of the issues affecting the Hispanic population and to develop the knowledge of emerging and existing technologies. Many colleges and universities are currently addressing the needs of the Hispanic population; however, while many of these excellent programs are known locally, they are not recognized nationally or internationally. It is only through publications such as the Online Journal that we can focus a wide spotlight on the good work that is being done by our colleagues.
The HETS journal is peer-reviewed and available in both electronic and hard copies. Our readership includes researchers, scholars, students and organizations who are interested in technologies, higher education and the Hispanic population. The journal also highlights the use of technology to improve pedagogy.
It is my sincere hope that you share the link to our journal with your colleagues. As, research, studies and technological advances continue to come to market, an independent voice regarding the use of that technology is essential. Should you have an innovative technique or would like share your knowledge and experience in technologies impacting higher education, please consider submitting an article for the next edition.
Many thanks to Dr. Chirino, Editor-in-Chief, and the members of the Editorial Board who reviewed and selected the articles among the many wonderful submissions we received.
I hope that you find our spring issue both informative and interesting.
Eduardo Marti, Ph. D. Vice Chancellor for Community Colleges, The City University of New York (CUNY)
